Downhill skiing is one of the most popular winter sports in the country. Every year, almost seven million Americans hit the ski slopes. This dwarfs by a factor of three other winter sports such as cross country skiing and ice hockey. Only the ever increasing in popularity sport of snowboarding comes close with a little over six million snowboarders in the country.

When the decision was made in 2005 that the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 would be hosted by Liberec there were shouts of joy not only among those who were directly involved in the success but among all skiers in the Czech Republic too. As the Czech Republic is a country of skiers, the joy was really great and it was celebrated mainly on the main square of the City of Liberec.
