When you hit the mountain on your first skiing or snowboarding trip there are a lot of things on your mind. Are you going to embarrass yourself out there? Will you learn quickly enough? Most of all, you’re likely excited over how much fun you’re about to have. However, it’s important to keep in mind that skiing and snowboarding are sports filled with equipment, starkly colder weather, and the spending of money. So, on your first trip up the mountain, be sure to have the right equipment with you to ensure you are ready.

Everything you wear should be waterproof. You might have decided at the last minute to go on that ski weekend with your classmates, but you need to pick up or borrow something to wear other than your cotton sweater and long johns. If you don’t wear the proper waterproofed gear you’re going to be very cold, very wet, and very unhappy by the end of your first afternoon on the slopes. Don’t get sick right away. It’s not a good way to commemorate your first skiing trip.

Food is very important when skiing or snowboarding. You’ll be using a lot of energy up very quickly and you likely will not notice as you have the time of your life doing it. You should have energy bars or trail mix on you while out on the slopes and remember to feed yourself every couple of hours. Before skiing, there are a few cardinal rules to follow. First, always keep your boots buckled when they aren’t being used. It seems silly, but the hard plastic shells stay in the perfect shape when buckled up – and when they aren’t, they flatten out into unnatural conditions. When this happens, it makes it difficult to buckle your boots up in the morning, and can make for an uncomfortable day on the slopes.

Second, make sure to warm your boots up before you strap them on! This is especially important if your boots are stored in a cold garage, or if you’ve got a habit of throwing them in the back of the pickup on your way to the resort. When boots are cold, the plastic becomes extremely stiff and inflexible, making them difficult to get on, and uncomfortable once they are on. Aside from that, when you start your day off with a cold boot you’re almost guaranteed to have cold feet all day. Your boot does a great job of insulating your foot from the cold air and snow, but if it’s cold to begin with, there’s not much hope.

After a day on the slopes, take a few minutes to dry your skis off. It’s awfully tempting to just throw them in the car and head home, but the extra time it takes will be well worth it. If your skis still have snow on them when you put them away, the edges will quickly rust, and you’ll be stuck with rusty edges or an expensive tuning bill.

Even if you keep your edges dry and rust free, its a good idea to give your skis a professional tune occasionally. Keeping your bases waxed will make them fast and durable, and a sharpened edge is predictable and responsive. Since the conditions of your skis deteriorates slowly under normal use, its easy to be lulled into thinking that they are handling just as well as they always have – but with a quick tune up, you’ll find that they’re easier and more fun to ski on.

Lastly, when those long summer months arrive, its important to find a good place to store your skis. Outside in a garage seems convenient, but its important to pay attention to the moisture levels in the area. In a garage where humidity can fluctuate wildly with the weather, skis are likely to rust – sometimes severely. While you’re bound to have some changes in humidity inside as well, skis tend to fare better there.

Because it is necessary to wear extra layers of clothing, you actually sweat more and generally do not even realise it because all the perspiration is absorbed by the extra layers. You can feel like you are freezing, yet you are still losing essential moisture simply because you are breathing.

Thus, a lot of people do not feel as thirsty in winter as they would if they were sweating just as much in the summer, and as a result they do not drink nearly enough. This is especially common when you are skiing. You are usually wearing even more layers of clothes than usual, you are flying down slopes at fast speeds in the cold air, and you are having fun – it is pretty easy not to notice you are thirsty. So take precautions in order to stay hydrated when you go skiing – there are lots of easy ways to help you do so.

First of all, carry your own water. The act of downhill skiing can make you lose as much as two pints of sweat because you are exerting so much energy. It is essential that you do not wait until you get thirsty, but rather drink steadily and at regular intervals the entire time you are out skiing. It is best to take a minimum of a litre of water along with you. Water is the best thing to drink to keep yourself hydrated and you should steer clear of fruit juices and sodas. They are diuretics and the high sugar content can simply make you thirstier than before. If you also bring snacks to eat during breaks, make sure you do not eat anything high in salt or sugar.

You should also bring a back pack – naturally, of course; you have to carry the water somewhere. However, you can also carry more than a litre of it in a bag, especially if you think you will be out longer than two hours.

You can consider getting a camel pack to help you stay hydrated as well. A camel pack fits like a vest around your torso. It closes by zips or clips down the front and there is a reservoir within the pack that can hold various amounts of water. There is also a tube which can connect to your mouth; it is basically just a straw that lets you pull liquid from the camel pack.

By tucking the end of the tube inside your waist band or jacket, you can prevent it from freezing on particularly cold days. However some camel packs employ a system which keeps the tube from getting frozen.

Lastly, simply do not overdo it. Allow yourself to take frequent or at least regular breaks, and take the time to utilise whatever water reservoir you decide to use, and of course, have fun!

The popularity of skiing has grown enormously since the 1970s. Unprecedented numbers of people now take to the slopes each year to embark on ski holidays. Although skiing has only recently become an extremely popular pastime it is rooted in Ancient Mythology.

Ski Holidays were first mentioned in a book of Norse Mythology. The Prose Edda is a collection of Icelandic poems that was written by Snorri Sturluson in 1220. The collection includes many stories from Norse Mythology. The anthology is separated into two parts. The second section is called the Skaldskaparmal and it includes the story of Skadi the snow shoe goddess.

The giantess Skadi was the daughter of the giant Thjazi and the wife of Nord. The story follows that Thjazi was killed by the gods after he kidnapped Idunn who was the custodian of apples that preserved youthfulness. Horrified, Skadi takes up her armour and weapons and travels to Asgard, the place where the Gods lived, to avenge his death. The Gods are remorseful and offer Skadi the opportunity to choose a husband from amongst them as compensation for her loss. She is only able to see their feet whilst she makes her decision. She selects a pair of feet that she finds particularly beautiful and they belong to the God of wind and sea Njord.

The second part of the compensation settlement was that the Gods were to make Skadi laugh. This was considered seemingly impossible. The God charged with this task making her laugh was Loki. In an attempt to make her laugh he takes a cord and ties one end of the cord around his testicles. He then ties the other end of the chord to a goat’s beard. He then proceeded to tug against the goat. As the two squealed Skadi could not control her laughter and the God’s achieved atonement.

Problems arose when the newlyweds tried to set up their first home. Njord wanted to live near the sea but Skadi could not stand the sound of the seagulls. Skadi on the other hand wanted to live in the mountains however Njord could not stand the sound of the wolves. Eventually the couple were forced to separate. Skadi returned to her mountain home and spends her time travelling across the mountain snow on skis and hunting with her bow and arrow. This is why she is known as the snowshoe goddess and can be seen as the grandmother of skiing.

If Skadi is the grandmother of skiing then the father of modern skiing is Sondre Norheim. Norheim is from the small Nowegian town of Morghedal known as the cradle of skiing. He pioneered the improvement of ski fittings and his friends were the first to run ski schools that taught people how to ski. He was an enthusiastic downhill skier and made the improvements to the ski bindings so that he could turn easier on the slopes. This has improved the pace at which skiers can complete a slope and has contributed to the increase in people embarking on ski holidays.
